Horse Care Lease or Donation Information
Thank you for considering The Right Step, Inc. for your horse’s next career!
Working in a program that provides adaptive riding and equine assisted learning is a difficult job and not every horse is suitable for this type of program.  Horses may work in up to three lessons a day and will most likely work four to five days per week. The lessons at The Right Step, Inc. are less athletically strenuous on horses than some forms of competitive riding...but our horses still need to be in good shape and able to work on a consistent basis.  Due to the range of clients served and the quality of programs provided, high standards are maintained for the horses working in our program.

Potential Horse Requirements:
  • Sound at the walk, trot, and canter
  • Excellent ground manners
  • Well trained under saddle (formal training in a discipline is required)
  • Ability to comfortably and safely carry 15-20% of their body weight under saddle
  • Difficult to startle or spook
  • No major health issues and up to date on vaccinations, deworming, dental, and farrier
  • Current negative Coggins
  • Sight in both eyes
  • No older than 20 years of age

As part of The Right Step, Inc. herd your horse will receive:
  • Custom feeding three times daily
  • Daily turn out
  • Daily grooming
  • Custom exercise routine
  • Lots of love from clients, volunteers, and staff!

It is very important that each horse brought into the program is happy being a part of the program.  Holding a job in adaptive riding is not the best fit for every horse. See below for detailed steps to care lease or donate a horse to The Right Step, Inc.

Steps to Donate a Horse:
  1. Read Donation Process Letter.
  2. Fill out Potential Horse Evaluation Form  and return to The Right Step, Inc.
  3. If horse is a potential match for our program, we will schedule and on-site evaluation.
  4. Schedule a vet check (horse must receive a clean bill of health and must be up to date on vaccinations, deworming, dental, farrier, and have a negative Coggins).  Vet check letter required before horse is brought on The Right Step, Inc. property (sample vet letter).
  5. Horse comes on trial for 30 days.
  6. Owner receives Donation Letter if horse is accepted into the program by The Right Step, Inc.

The Right Step, Inc. always give the Donor of the horse first right of refusal when it is time for the horse to retire from the program.  Questions? Contact Christine Remy, Board Chair, at [email protected].
