Volunteering Has Shaped Me — And the Impact I Can Make on Others
I chose The Right Step Inc. (TRS) to complete my high school volunteer hours and capstone project. What began as an opportunity to explore my passion quickly became a life-changing experience, connecting my desire to make a difference with meaningful personal growth. Volunteering has deeply shaped me, both personally and through the impact on others.
From my very first day, I was welcomed into an environment built on patience, trust, and compassion. TRS focuses on equine-assisted learning, where individuals can connect with horses in a safe and supportive setting. Being part of this process allowed me to see firsthand how powerful these interactions can be. Horses are incredibly intuitive animals, responding to human emotions in ways that encourage self-awareness, confidence, and emotional growth.
A moment that stood out the most during my experience was when I brought students from my high school to TRS for a field trip as part of my project. These were peers I had been working with since January, and it was incredibly meaningful to watch them step into a completely new environment. I had the opportunity to guide and support them as they interacted with the horses, and I saw a side of them I had never seen before. Some students who were usually more reserved began to open up, show confidence, and engage in ways that truly surprised me. Watching them grow in that moment and knowing I played a role in creating that experience was something I will never forget.
My experience at TRS helped me grow. I developed communication skills, learned patience, and gained appreciation for the different ways people learn. Working with staff and participants taught me empathy and adaptability, especially when supporting those with varied needs.
My project allowed me to study the impact of equine-assisted programs, but volunteering at TRS made that learning real. It confirmed my passion for helping others and making a positive difference.
Being part of TRS helped me realize the power of equine-assisted learning to encourage personal growth and connection. I am grateful for how much I learned and contributed, and for the chance to help others experience positive change.
